Phlebotomy Certification: CPT vs PBT — Which One Should You Get?

Two certifications dominate the phlebotomy world. Both are nationally recognized. Both will get you hired. But they're not identical.

CPT — Certified Phlebotomy Technician (NHA)

The National Healthcareer Association's CPT is the most popular certification among new phlebotomists.

  • Exam: 100 multiple-choice questions, 2 hours
  • Cost: $155 (as of 2026)
  • Eligibility: Completion of an approved training program OR 1 year of work experience
  • Renewal: Every 2 years (10 CE credits required)
  • Best for: Entry-level phlebotomists, those whose school partners with NHA

PBT — Phlebotomy Technician (ASCP)

The American Society for Clinical Pathology's PBT carries significant weight in hospital settings.

  • Exam: 100 multiple-choice questions, 2 hours
  • Cost: $170 (as of 2026)
  • Eligibility: Training program + clinical hours (requirements vary by route)
  • Renewal: Every 3 years (36 CE credits)
  • Best for: Those targeting hospital jobs, long-term lab careers

Which Do Employers Prefer?

Honestly? Most employers accept either. But there are patterns:

  • Hospitals and large health systems tend to prefer ASCP's PBT
  • Clinics, blood banks, and plasma centers are typically fine with NHA's CPT
  • Travel phlebotomy agencies usually accept both

Can You Get Both?

Yes, and some phlebotomists do. It's not necessary for most jobs, but dual certification can make your resume stand out in competitive markets.

Our Recommendation

If your school offers an NHA-partnered program, go CPT first — it's slightly cheaper and faster to obtain. If you're aiming for a hospital career from day one, PBT may give you a slight edge.

Either way, get certified. Uncertified phlebotomists earn less and have fewer job options. Period.
